BEFORE 13 SUMMERS

Zeris' parents hail from the Veena tribe in the Skatay Range. They had broken the Green Word by traveling with visiting traders, returning with them to Eorzea. For unknown reasons, they weren't with him by his sixth summer. He was found in the Thanalan wilds and brought back to Ul'dah.
He became a foster child, moving between homes across the sultanate of Thanalan. The kit never stayed in one place for long, due to roughhousing and general 'behavioral issues.' One caretaker reported that he wouldn't listen to instruction and had to be handled with force.
By his ninth summer, Zeris returned to Ul'dah. He was unfit for external homing, and so he was placed in a family practiced in raising exiled Miqo'te children. The kids of Ul'dah were crueler than those in the villages. His leporine features scared them, and the boys would always reject him, saying "Girls can't play with us."
The incessant taunting got to him, and one unfortunate bully was his first victim. He was pried from the child by passersby, thrashing in their arms. Blood dripped from his claws and fingernails, and the kid held grievous wounds. He was promptly expelled from his home and handed to an orphanage.
At his eleventh summer, the Seventh Umbral Calamity had consumed the Source. Orphans became more common. Zeris left the crowded orphanage and lived on the streets.
Life was difficult. Getting proper work as a weaker child bore no fruit, and working in the mines was a death sentence. Many refugees worked under aristocrats and worked long hours for little gil. The rascal often stole money via pickpocketing or from the various fountains while the guards weren't looking.

WHAT HE REMEMBERS

Zeris began working by his thirteenth summer. Any type of work was in high demand, as the continent of Eorzea was in the process of rebuilding post-Calamity. When he started puberty, his sex became more apparent.
He received odd jobs from smaller clients, but built a reputation for a sense of professionalism at his age and his ability to get things done. He made just enough to buy the necessities, though it was common to go hungry and be without shelter. Outside of work, he was quite bold with others and hated when they glared at him.
The fourteen-year-old kit was pressured into giving gil while traveling through a breezeway. He tried walking away and ignoring them, but his assailants shoved him into a wall, calling him a dumbass rabbit who 'couldn't use his big ears to listen.' Zeris was held by his exposed tail. In his escape attempt he tripped and couldn't get far. They pinned him to the cobbles below, gripping and pulling his tail tighter until he was a crying mess. After they stole some coin, he was covered in many bruises and some blood from scraping on the rough sandstone wall. From then on, he no longer let his tail be visible. It's always tucked or hidden away.
By fifteen, Zeris was scouted by an employer impressed by his skills. Despite the externally kind demeanor, their relationship became perverted. Zeris worked for a pittance in gil, but had a safe space to live. He was given excessive praise and was discouraged from seeking help from the employer's servants. They shared secrets with one another, with the employer declaring his adoration for the kit. He openly admitted that he would've loved the boy, had he originally been a girl. In a miracle of circumstance, Zeris escaped and lived on the streets once more.
One Ishgardian noble became interested in his work when he was sixteen summers eld. Though he wasn't a member of the more well-known High Houses, his influence was still significant. Zeris was employed under him, moved to Ishgard, and learned proper combat, including rudimentary practice of red magic. The man wanted to revitalize the art of fencing and bring red magicks to the city-state of Ishgard after the Dragonsong War had ended.

THE PRESENT

As of now, Zeris works as one of Lady Tatiana Ainsworth's retainers, the owner of Wychwood Tonics, per her request in partnership with The Black Lotus Teahouse & Agency.
He still works his usual professions as a contractor and gearsmithy on the side.

MEMORIES LOST

Zeris doesn't remember anything before the age of 13 summers, but others may know about — or have heard of — a scrappy rabbit kit from many summers ago in Ul'dah.

EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE

While being rude results in Zeris being rude back, kindness is just as rewarding. He still struggles with some aspects of reciprocity in social situations. However, he can do any favor of equal merit.

CONFLICT OF INTERESTS

He becomes efficient and professional when it comes to work, but he has quite the attitude if he's stirred up. Poking and prodding riles him.

WATCH FOR SIGNS

Zeris is unpredictable at times. His anger is always a gamble. Sometimes it manifests as a quiet, judgmental rage. Other times it is an explosive frustration. Even then, he may not get mad. Be on your guard, or stoke the fire.

RAISE A GLASS

When he was younger, food was hard to come by. Snacks and drinks are a great way to sate the jack, and perhaps get him to talk.

ALWAYS LEARNING, EVER VIGILANT

This jack is observant. Very observant. He remembers many things and is aware of his surroundings at all times. No book is safe around him, no stone unturned. Flaws will be pointed out and weaknesses exploited when least expected, so keep a close eye as he would.
